Dealing with sin
Read the following passages and then consider the questions at the end.
John 8:31-36, “Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, ‘If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ 33 ‘We are descendants of Abraham,’ they answered him, ‘and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free’?’ 34 Jesus responded, ‘Truly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.’”
Romans 7:14-8:1, “For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold as a slave under sin. 15 For I do not understand what I am doing, because I do not practice what I want to do, but I do what I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 So now I am no longer the one doing it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it. 19 For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, I am no longer the one that does it, but it is the sin that lives in me. 21 So I discover this law: When I want to do what is good, evil is present with me. 22 For in my inner self I delight in God’s law, 23 but I see a different law in the parts of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself am serving the law of God, but with my flesh, the law of sin. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.”
2 Corinthians 10:13, “We, however, will not boast beyond measure but according to the measure of the area of ministry that God has assigned to us, which reaches even to you.”
Psalm 103:12, “ As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”
1 John 1:5-9, “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him.
2 This is how we know that we love God’s children: when we love God and obey his commands. 3 For this is what love for God is: to keep his commands. And his commands are not a burden, 4 because everyone who has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. 5 Who is the one who conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 Jesus Christ — he is the one who came by water and blood, not by water only, but by water and by blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood — and these three are in agreement. 9 If we accept human testimony, God’s testimony is greater, because it is God’s testimony that he has given about his Son.”
This is in the context of fellowship or closeness with God. Your salvation and relationship with God was established by grace when you put your faith in Jesus. Now, sin affects your closeness to God and He forgives you and restores closeness when you confess it.
