Identity
We’re not alone in this life, we have our Heavenly Father who loves us dearly. In the book of John, we learn that when we believe in Jesus, and accept Him as our savior, God gives us the right to become His children. In the midst of life, it can be easy to lose our identity in many things. Sometimes it is our job, parenthood, or a hobby. I want to remind you today that you’re a member in God’s family, and first and foremost you should find your identity in Jesus because this is the only identity that will satisfy you. Yes, we ’re involved many activities and they can be important, but don’t find your identity there, find it in Christ. Through Him alone, we can be everything He wants us to be.
Read the following passages and then consider the questions at the end.
In John 1:12 (CSB), Jesus said, "But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name."
In John 10:27-30 (CSB), Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”
Romans 8:38-39 (CSB), "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
2 Corinthians 5:17 (CSB), "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!"
Ephesians 2:8-10 (CSB), "For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift — 9 not from works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do."
Philippians 1:6 (CSB), "I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
Hebrews 12:1-2, "Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, 2 keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
Psalm 139:1-18, "Lord, you have searched me and known me. 2 You know when I sit down and when I stand up; you understand my thoughts from far away. 3 You observe my travels and my rest; you are aware of all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue, you know all about it, Lord. 5 You have encircled me; you have placed your hand on me. 6 This wondrous knowledge is beyond me. It is lofty; I am unable to reach it. 7 Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. 9 If I fly on the wings of the dawn and settle down on the western horizon, 10 even there your hand will lead me; your right hand will hold on to me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light around me will be night” — 12 even the darkness is not dark to you. The night shines like the day; darkness and light are alike to you. 13 For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. Your works are wondrous, and I know this very well. 15 My bones were not hidden from you when I was made in secret, when I was formed in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began. 17 God, how precious your thoughts are to me; how vast their sum is! 18 If I counted them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; when I wake up, I am still with you."
